Travertine tends to run cooler under bare feet than concrete pavers, which is why it ends up around so many Brevard County pools. We install it on a proper base and seal it with products made for natural stone.
How we build it
Most of the paver work you see in Brevard County is concrete pavers — molded concrete with the color dyed in at the plant. Travertine is different. It is natural stone, cut from quarried blocks, and the color runs all the way through it. The Florida sun that bakes the color out of dyed concrete has no surface dye to work on here, which is why an older travertine deck usually still reads as travertine instead of washed-out gray. It also tends to stay cooler under bare feet in July. Around a pool in Melbourne or Viera, that one property sells the stone by itself.
Here is the other half, because there is one. Travertine is softer than concrete pavers — edges can chip, and unsealed stone soaks up rust, tannin and sunscreen stains. It costs more, and it needs a sealer suited to natural stone rather than the film we would put on concrete. What does not change is the ground work: base built in compacted lifts, edge restraint anchored into the base instead of the bedding sand, joints re-sanded with polymeric sand where the pattern calls for it. And sealer only goes on clean, completely dry stone — damp travertine under a coat clouds the same way damp concrete pavers do.
What that means on your job
Travertine usually runs cooler than concrete pavers, so it stays easier on bare feet through a Brevard summer afternoon. That is the main reason it keeps showing up around pools and lanais from Melbourne Beach to Merritt Island. We set it with the coping and the drainage worked out first, not as an afterthought.
Travertine is porous, so unsealed stone takes on rust, sunscreen and pool-chemical stains. We seal it with products suited to natural stone, wet-look or matte, and only after the deck is clean and completely dry — sealer over damp stone clouds, same as on concrete pavers. Plan on roughly every 2-3 years.
Natural stone does not excuse a soft base. We build in compacted lifts, anchor the edge restraint into the base instead of the bedding sand, and look at where water actually goes before the first stone is set. A travertine deck over a lazy base fails the same way a concrete paver deck does.

Neither wins across the board. Travertine tends to run cooler under bare feet, and its color is the stone itself — there is no dyed surface layer for the Florida sun to bake out. Concrete pavers are harder, come in more shapes and colors, and cost less. For a pool deck or lanai, travertine is worth a serious look. For a daily-driver driveway, concrete pavers usually make more sense. We install both, and we will tell you which fits the job.

You can pick a wet-look finish that deepens the color or a matte finish that keeps the dry, natural look. Plan on resealing roughly every 2-3 years.
Yes. A lot of our sealing work is on pavers and stone somebody else laid. We look at the joints and any old coating first, because sealing over a failing film makes things worse, not better. Then we clean it, let it dry completely, and seal it. If the deck needs re-sanding or a repair before sealer goes down, that goes in the written estimate, itemized, so you can see exactly what you are paying for.
